I used to shoot with the SONY A6000 for travel and loved this camera so much that I decided I wanted to invest further into a SONY A6400 camera for travel photography. For my professional work I use Canon DSLR gear but I found it too heavy when hiking or travelling, so I knew I needed something lightweight and I wanted mirrorless.
Now I’ve upgraded to the SONY A6400 mirrorless camera and take it everywhere I travel. The A6400 has many features that make it the ideal companion on your next trip. Here are my top 8 reasons why I recommend a SONY A6400 when you travel.
- Interchangeable lenses
The Sony A6400 comes with a E PZ 16-50mm OSS lens, which is a great starter lens that you can use to take photos of all kinds of subjects. This is what is known as ‘the kit” lens and it is fairly basic. I upgraded pretty quickly and bought a Tamron 11-20mm wide-angle lens for landscapes and travel. I also have a Tamron 85mm prime lens which is great for close-ups and portraits.
I carry 3 lenses with me when I travel; the kit lens, E PZ 16-50mm OSS, the Tamron 11-20mm and 85mm prime lens. It is definitely worth investing in some additional lenses. Another great lens is the Carl Zeiss 24mm prime lens for SONY. It is very fast and sharp!

The Sony has a 24.2MP APS-C sensor and BIONZ X processor, which results in excellent image quality, even in low light. This camera can shoot up to ISO 51,200 with good results. It’s also got an anti-distortion shutter mechanism that lets you shoot at higher shutter speeds while keeping images sharp.
Sensor-shift stabilization helps eliminate camera shake and produce sharper images in dim surroundings. If you’re looking for a camera that can handle low light situations, the Sony A6400 is a great choice.

- Great video quality and a smooth zoom lens
Sony’s A6400 has some of the best video quality seen in a camera. Not only is it capable of shooting 4K video at 30 frames per second, but it can also handle extremely fast motion—like handheld shots of cars driving by or dogs running towards you—with little to no visible distortion. The zoom lens is smooth and quiet, so you don’t have to worry about your subjects hearing the sound of the motor whirring when they move around within range of your lens.
The electronic shutter on this camera is one of the fastest around, allowing you to shoot up to 1/32000th of a second (that’s 32 nanoseconds!) without using an ND filter like most other cameras require. Let’s start with the obvious: The electronic shutter is great for reducing motion blur. If you’re shooting a scenic landscape and want to take advantage of as much detail as possible, it can help ensure that your subject is crisp and clear.
But how does an electronic shutter do that? It works by capturing several consecutive images at once (usually in rapid succession) and then combining them together into one photo—in other words, it captures multiple exposures at once instead of taking one photo at a time like most cameras do.
This results in less motion blur because there are more “exposures” within each frame of time. In other words, if you press down on the shutter button and release it quickly (or even slightly press down halfway), there will be no blurry parts because each exposure was captured before any movement occurred after pressing down halfway until releasing completely.
Instead of capturing only one exposure per second when pressing down halfway (which takes milliseconds), you’ll capture seven or eight exposures per second when using an electronic shutter!
Conclusion
The SONY A6400 mirrorless camera is a great travel companion. It has many features that make it easy to take great photos on the go and it is lightweight and small.
It is small enough to fit in your pocket and weighs less than 400g (0.89lb). In fact, it’s one of the smallest and lightest full frame mirrorless cameras on the market. This makes it easy to carry around all day long without feeling bulky or uncomfortable in your handbag or backpack.
